If you are unexpectedly pregnant, you may be considering abortion. Abortion is a medical procedure and you deserve to know all the facts about potential complications and side effects. At the Open Door, we offer free and confidential abortion information so you can make an educated decision for your unplanned pregnancy.

Types of Abortion

The Abortion Pill

A medical abortion often referred to as the abortion pill or chemical abortion uses a series of medications to terminate the pregnancy. Medical abortion is only available early in pregnancy and is typically not available for pregnancy further along than ten weeks.

Mifepristone, the first of the two pills, cuts off the supply of progesterone to the pregnancy. Progesterone is vital for the pregnancy to continue, and without it, the pregnancy will terminate. The first pill is usually taken in a clinic, and the second, misoprostol, is taken at home. Misoprostol causes your uterus to contract and encourages you to dispell of the pregnancy tissue through the vaginal canal.

Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion is used for pregnancies beyond ten weeks. This is an in-clinic procedure and involves dilating the cervix and removing the pregnancy with surgical tools. Depending on your provider, local or general anesthesia may be available.
